Story

Raayan, also known as Kaartavaraayan (Dhanush), lives a peaceful life in Anjanaouram with his siblings Durga (Dushara Vijayan), Muthuvelaraayan (Sundeep Kishan), and Maanikyaraayan (Kalidas Jayaram). Their peace is broken when Muthu fights with the men of the local don Dorai (Saravanan), starting a violent rivalry. Another criminal enters the fight, Sethuram (SJ Suryah), and he has a lethal scheme to kill Raayan. What does Sethuram want to murder Raayan? Behind the scenes, who is Raayan? What does he really want? All these truths are revealed in the film.

Review

Since Dhanush is directing the movie, anticipations were high when it was first revealed. In addition to his powerful acting, Dhanush deftly displays his directing abilities.

Sundeep Kishan assumes a major role and portrays a character with gray hues in a way that is very remarkable. His scenes with Aparna Balamurali and Dhanush are entertaining.

Surprisingly strong for her role—which intensifies in the second half—is Dushara Vijayan. As always, SJ Suryah delivers a flawless performance. Selvaraghavan, Aparna Balamurali, and other actors give respectable performances in their parts.

There isn’t much in the film that is novel for audiences. Although Dhanush tells a straightforward tale with few surprises, the impact of the plot is lessened by the plodding screenplay.

There isn’t a compelling hook to highlight the tension between Dhanush and SJ Suryah. SJ Suryah’s potential is not fully utilized, and the arguments put forth are not persuasive.

Due to its violent violence, the movie may not be appropriate for family audiences and is primarily geared toward action movie fans.

The character of Prakash Raj is unoriginal, and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar is not very important to the story. Furthermore, adding more emotional nuance could have made the movie better. The needless scenes that were added to the second part of the movie to make it longer felt like a drag.

Conclusion

Raayan isn’t particularly innovative, but it manages to pass because to the excellent performances of Dhanush, Sundeep Kishan, Dushara Vijayan, and SJ Suryah. Although suitable, the action moments are not appropriate for a family audience. Notable shortcomings include a sluggish second half and a weak hook point. If you do want to watch it, set reasonable expectations for yourself.
